Southern Water - Ian Selby, Apprentice of the Year 2011Southern Water has embarked on a ground-breaking training scheme with Babcock International in partnership with the Royal Navy, leading to a modern four-year Apprentice Training Scheme being introduced.

The scheme involves a six-month placement at HMS Sultan during the first year where expert training is provided. This is vital because here the apprentices are not only taught technical skills but, more importantly, are also equipped with essential life skills. The first year also includes six months of work-based training, when apprentices 'shadow' qualified electricians.

The next three years entail work experience with one day a week allocated to tuition at further education colleges across the south, with all apprentices studying the same courses.

There is also regular support from mentors, assessors and line managers, appointed by us or Babcock International.
