We are investing £30 million in carbon mitigation and energy efficiency schemes between 2010 and 2015 to help mitigate our carbon footprint.
Through this we aim to mitigate our carbon emissions by 30,000 tonnes each year and generate 20 per cent of our energy from renewable sources by 2020.
We already produce renewable ‘green’ energy at 13 of our wastewater treatment works in Combined Heat and Power (CHP) units and one more is under construction in Sussex.
These units take bio-gas created during the digestion stage of the treatment and use it to provide 80 per cent of the power used on site. Any surplus is exported to the National Grid.
The CHP units have the capacity to generate about 41 million kWh of electricity each year, about 10 per cent of the company’s annual consumption.
