We have developed a 25-year Water Resources Management Plan outlining how we intend to secure water supplies for our customers until 2035. A new 25-year outlook will be produced in five years time and this process will continue to be repeated to ensure we continue to plan ahead for the impacts of climate change.
In the future, we plan to take more water from rivers during the winter when they are full to store for the drier summer months when demand increases. An example is the construction of a river abstraction scheme on the River Arun at Pulborough in West Sussex.
In addition, we are also investigating the possibility of building coastal desalination plants to use seawater for drinking water, recycling wastewater to boost river levels and taking more water from underground aquifers.
Tackling leakage is also a priority and Southern Water has the lowest level of leakage of any of the 10 water and sewerage companies in England and Wales
