Environment Policy

Published September 2005

Our commitment:

Southern Water's management is committed to the development and execution of this Environment Policy with the aim of continually improving our environmental performance. Our Southern Water Environmental Policy Advisory Committee (SWEPAC) is responsible for this policy and its implementation.

The Managing Director is also responsible for the implementation of this policy and will make the necessary resources available to realise our corporate responsibilities.

The responsibility for environmental management and performance rests with all employees throughout the company.

  • We are committed to meeting or improving upon legislative and regulatory environmental requirements and codes of practice
  • We aim to contain any environmental impact of our activities to a practicable minimum
  • We will strive to be regarded as a good and trusted neighbour, demonstrating environmental care, in the communities in which we operate
  • We recognise our responsibility to operate within a framework that supports sustainable development and will establish, where possible, indicator targets which are measurable
  • We will continue to incorporate environmental issues into the business decision making process
  • We will develop and refine our Environmental Management System towards the ISO 14001 standard with the aim of continually improving our environmental performance
  • In demonstrating our environmental responsibility and active care of the environment, we will continue to develop indicators with measurable targets of environmental performance. We will report progress against these targets annually
  • We will continue to promote, within the business, the efficient use, and, hence, the conservation of, water, energy and natural resources
  • We will continue to promote the purchase and use of materials within our business in a manner that minimises potential environmental effects
  • We will further develop waste minimisation initiatives, recycling, re-using and reducing across the business ï We will employ relevant environmental specialists and provide appropriate environmental training to our staff to maintain and improve our environmental performance
  • We will advise our customers, employees, regulators, investors, suppliers and other stakeholders of our environmental initiatives, especially those to which everyone can contribute, such as the efficient use of water and waste minimisation
