Friars Bay Head Shaft

Where is it?
To the east of the A259 coast road and north of the Highway in Peacehaven.

How long will you be working there?
Works commenced at the Friars Bay Head Shaft site on July 27, 2009. A completion date is set for summer 2011.

What work is being done here?
We will be sinking an 8m diameter shaft into the ground to a depth of approx. 41m. We will then be digging a tunnel from the bottom of this shaft southwards to a new shaft being constructed on the promenade at Friars Bay, and then out to sea, to connect to the new 2.5km long sea outfall being constructed off Friars Bay. The tunnel will be constructed using a technique called pipe jacking, in which a series of pipes are pushed through the ground while earth is mechanically excavated from the face of the tunnel.
We will therefore have deliveries of shaft and tunnel sections to the site, and will be removing the shaft and tunnel excavation spoil from the site.

What are the working hours?
07h00 to 19h00 Monday to Friday
07h00 to 13h00 on Saturdays.

How will you access the site?
Access to the site will be from the A259 South Coast Road, via the highway.

How will I be affected by the works?
As it is a construction site there will inevitably be an increase on existing noise levels. Noise levels will be carefully monitored and managed throughout the works to ensure they are within the limits set by East Sussex County Council as part of the planning permission for the site.

What will we see in the first few weeks?
On July 27, the Friars Bay Head shaft site was fenced, and the scrub over the site will start to be removed. We will also be clearing the site of reptiles over a four-week period.
Towards the end of July/beginning of August we shall prepare the site ready for commencement of works to sink the shaft.

How will the site be reinstated at the end of the works?
The top of the shaft will be finished to the current ground level. There will be some manhole covers to enable access to the shaft in the future. The remaining land will be returned back to current levels and re-seeded to grass.

Will it be safe for members of the public to walk past the site?
Southern Water and 4Delivery regard the safety of the public and the workforce as the highest priority and safe working practices will be adopted at all times. All works will be fully contained within barriers and any changes to pedestrian routes will be clearly marked.
You are asked to take care in the vicinity of the works and particularly to advise children of the dangers of playing near our works, not only while work is in progress, but also outside working hours.
