Southern Water - Mr Save-It with some children from the Sholing Community Centre

Sholing celebrates community centre re-fit

A team of volunteers from Southern Water and Romsey Refurbishments worked for a week during the summer holidays to install new “low flush” toilets and taps, paint and re-tile the walls and repair an area of damp on the ceiling. They also lowered one of the urinals to make it more suitable for young visitors.

The much needed work has not only improved the facilities for users, which includes a pre-school in term time, a senior citizens’ club and army cadet group, but should also help the centre cut its bill as the new fixtures will use less water.

The completion of the work was celebrated with a visit by Southern Water’s mascot Mr Save-It to the centre to meet children from the pre-school and give out re-usable water bottles and activity packs.

Paul Sear, Southern Water’s Metering District Manager, said: "On the first visit to the centre we saw that some real improvements could be made to the facilities and hopefully help the centre reduce its water use and save money. In particular we wanted to make it more accessible for the youngsters who use the centre and make it more bright and cheerful. The team worked really hard to make some much needed improvements and we are delighted that the groups based at the centre are so pleased with the end result.”

Jenny Roles, Chairperson of Sholing Community Centre, said: "Everyone is going to benefit as it is used by so many members of the community. We wouldn't have had the funds to do any of this work ourselves so we are very grateful to Southern Water for its help."

Southern Water offers all members of staff two volunteer days each year to help support charity and community projects.
